The first stage of Scippy was commenced in September 1995, linking Meggalong Valley School with Hazelbrook School. Meggalong Valley is a fairly isolated school of 18 students situated in the NSW Blue Mountains. The connection allows pupils at both schools to work collaboratively in real-time, by sharing applications, and by allowing the Meggalong students full, real-time access to the Hazelbrook CD-Rom resources such as Encarta and Great Barrier Reef.

The major points of connection between the pilot study sites were completed and tested in the last few weeks of December 1995. All participating schools will be fully operational by the end of Term 1 1996.

The next phase of the project involves incorporation of a Satellite link, connecting with Dubbo School of Distance Education (School of The Air). A proof of concept is currently under trial by Clairgate Public School. Some schools are already using the sytem to trial real-time video conferencing. More news about that is coming soon...!

The project was developed through a collaboration between NSWDet Metropolitan West Region and Studio of Arts & Sciences (SAAS), with core infrastructure located at the SAAS Sydney data centre.

We are particularly grateful to Novell, Apple Australia, Intel and Pacific Power for their support.
